The Only Condition For Using a FORMULA In Your Marketing
There are days, aren’t there, when the thought of sending an email feels like lifting a lead weight? Especially for those of us who aren’t naturally wired for constant social connection—the ones who find solace in solitude and deep thought rather than endless texting or chattering with friends.
If you’re anything like me, a 1/3 Projector, reaching out doesn’t always come naturally. It’s a muscle that needs conscious flexing, not an effortless flow.
I’m definitely not one of those people who spend all day on the phone. My default setting is introspection, not outreach. Truth be told, after navigating the profound personal shifts of the past few years, particularly since my husband Les passed away in 2023, I’ve been operating at a fraction of my usual capacity. This time has been about “Slowing Down to Accelerate” – a necessary reset. But it also means that getting back into the rhythm of things, like consistent email marketing, has felt… well, a bit rusty.
It reminds me of my 16/48 Channel of Talent—the Mastery through Repetition, the understanding that true skill often emerges not from innate ability but from persistent, dedicated practice. Every “talent” I possess today was once a new skill I probably fumbled with. What looks natural now is simply the result of showing up again and again until mastery emerges.
So, for this current hurdle of email marketing, I had to find an approach that worked for me.
I made an intention to discover something that could help me bounce back into the flow, even when the connection felt clunky. And a few weeks later, the answer arrived, as it often does when you truly open yourself to it: A FORMULA.
Now, before you recoil at the word “formula” – because I, of all people, preach against prescriptive marketing advice – hear me out.
When something in life or business feels overwhelmingly heavy, turning to a formula can be a game-changer.
It is not about blindly following rules. It’s about getting started. It’s a temporary scaffolding, not a permanent cage. And I’ve experienced its power countless times.
When I’ve wanted to eat more mindfully, it wasn’t about magically building a new habit from scratch. Every time I tried I couldn’t stick to it… And every time what worked was following a plan or using an app for a few weeks, just long enough to shift my internal compass from comfort-eating to considering nutritional value.
Or when I needed to rekindle my physical energy, as I do have quite a sedentary lifestyle, simple walks weren’t cutting it. I joined an aerial yoga class that felt utterly daunting at first, but it literally brought my physical health back a decade. The formula, the structured approach, provided the necessary momentum.
It’s the same with email marketing, there are times when content creation, or anything that feels like a mountain. In those times, a formula, even a rigid one, can be your lifeline.
Take content writing, for example – there are countless templates out there. For example, let me just invent one right here: “Start with a hook, explain the problem, highlight what they’re doing wrong, make your argument about what’s missing and why your solution is simple, then add a CTA.”
Is it guaranteed to get clients? Of course not. We’re adults; we know client attraction is far more nuanced. (But if you spoke directly to a problem of someone who not just a great fit for what you do, they are experiencing the crisis you described in that moment, so it just clicked and they feel this is the moment for them to take action – they they will absolutely take it.)
But here’s the secret power of a formula when you’re stuck: it gets you writing, it gets you talking, it gets the energy moving. It opens the flow. It helps you get into that zone where you can deviate from the suggested flow, trusting your intuition to just speak your truth. And that, my friends, is why it’s such a brilliant go-to for overwhelm.
For me, the actual writing isn’t the problem; it’s the feeling of “emailing people about what I write or record” that feels… weird. So, I created a little formula for those emails, a simple structure I can follow and fill in the blanks.
For instance, my formula for sharing blog articles and events looks something like this:
Greetings. Here’s info about an interesting event. Here’s my latest blog article. Here’s the event I’m speaking at next month. Sign off.
See how there’s no heavy selling? Yet, it offers diverse value points for different people on my list. The deeper magic? It keeps me consistent and in touch and ensures I’m not just sending “sell” emails, which, let’s be honest, can lead to a higher unsubscribe rate unless they’re a subtle sprinkle amidst a much richer tapestry of content-driven messages.
Now, I invite you to turn inward.
Where do you feel stuck in your business or even in your life?
What feels heavy, overwhelming, or just plain hard to initiate?
And more importantly, what simple formula could you devise or borrow to just get you started, to get the energy moving, and to ultimately open the flow back to your unique truth?
Think about it. The answers are within you, waiting to be formulated.
