Optimizing Your LinkedIn Presence, Even if You Are “Not on it”

by | Jul 27, 2024

I had a fabulous strategy call today with my client, Wanda, in which we talked about not being on social media that much. For example, I might show up and post more often “in person” on Facebook, but I never post on Instagram these days. Likewise, I barely visit LinkedIn, although, to my surprise, a couple of new clients mentioned that they found me through an article I published on my LinkedIn profile… Honestly, that was a big shock to me at first, but then it was evidence that my strategy – what I want to share with you now – works!

It came to me during the client call, almost like a “download.” We spoke about some core content themes she could be exploring for client attraction, and I mentioned that there are a lot of post types that can be written or created once, but then a lot of such content can be reposted every so often.

Unlike most believe (and I blame a lot of miscommunication from marketing and business coaches selling this idea), we do not really have to come up with anything new all the time. Automation tools, like my favorite, SocialBee, can take care of it on, for instance, LinkedIn, where your target audience may be checking you out without you being forced to play the LinkedIn Organic marketing game.

Frankly speaking, in my opinion, LinkedIn is (with the exception, perhaps, of a couple of industries or activities to which the medium is a perfect match, such as when seeking job opportunities or recruiting) a network on which most people are active only due to sense of ‘FOMO’ – the concept that “entrepreneurs and business owners hang out there, consequently, and logically, I should be on there too!” If you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that’s complete nonsense!

And this is precisely what we do not do – instead, we just take the top-level advice or thought and run with it, without questioning if this is ACTUALLY where our efforts should be. Believe me, I am not just saying all this; I have played the game, I know the rules, I stumbled and fell many a time, and I wanted to “throw in the towel” just as frequently. Unless you are a coach or consultant aiming at CEOs or corporations, spending too much time on LinkedIn is not essential for your client attractions strategy. There are better uses of that time and creativity.

Back to my call with Wanda. She actually targets small and medium business owners; they may or may not be on LinkedIn. In my experience – and I worked with so many SMEs from 2012-2018 in my digital marketing agency – most of them had a profile set up on LinkedIn but never logged in to look at the feed. Some did not even know their login details, so I had to log in and manage their profiles for them. How ironic for a professional network?

And yet, at the start of this article, I mentioned that a couple of clients recently stated that they found me through a LinkedIn article. I suspect it was not even a search on the LinkedIn platform itself that “served” that article to them but…. drumroll please… a good old Google search!

LinkedIn as a platform has a high domain authority and individual and strategically optimized articles posted there have a chance to rank higher in the search engines than your own website.

Let’s follow that logical chain of events for a minute – a person searches something relevant to your niche on Google, and your LinkedIn article pops up. They click and read it. The article speaks to them. What happens next?

They will click on your name to have a look at your profile, and that is a crucial part of the online visibility – that profile serves to either nurture their curiosity and drive them to your website, where they can have a full experience of YOU…

…or it can look strange, or weird, or abandoned, or boring – and they just carry on searching.

You do not have to be hanging around on LinkedIn and engaging with others all the time. All you need is to have a well-presented profile page and have a few key posts in your activity feed every so often. This is how you can leverage LinkedIn effectively, even if you don’t have the time or desire for regular posting. HOW?

Well, this is exactly what strategy calls are for, right? This – and so much more – I am here to mentor you if we are a good fit.
