Harness the Power of Your Human Design Definition for Boosted Productivity
Are you looking for a new way to boost your productivity and achieve your goals? Have you heard about Human Design, the revolutionary system that combines astrology, I Ching, Hindu-Brahmin numerology, and quantum physics?
This article will delve into how Human Design can help you tap into your unique strengths and boost your productivity. We’ll explore the three main definitions in Human Design: single, split, and triple/quadruple Split, and show you how to use this knowledge to make better decisions, reduce stress, and increase your effectiveness in all areas of your life. So, whether you’re a seasoned Human Design enthusiast or just starting to discover its benefits, read on to learn how this innovative system can help you achieve greater success and fulfillment.
In Human Design, a “definition” refers to the number of centers in a person’s design that are defined, meaning they have either a defined center (colored in) or a specific type of gateway (represented by a symbol). Centers are the nine primary energy centers in the Human Design body-mind chart and represent different aspects of a person’s life, such as their mind, emotions, communication, and relationships.
There are three main types of definitions in Human Design:
Single Definition:
A person with a single definition has one or more defined centers connected by channels. Single definition people are considered to have a clear and focused energy. They are often more decisive and can quickly put their thoughts into action. The Single definition gives you a consistent and reliable sense of wholeness within without the drive for someone “to complete you.” This allows you to digest information more quickly. The assimilation of information generally happens for you immediately, in one cohesive flow.
If you have a Single definition, you will benefit from working alone, where you can process and implement things quicker without any distractions. You are also the kind of independent person who does not need partnerships to feel “whole” you are great at creating partnerships where there is not so much co-dependency, and if things do not work out, it will be easier for you to move on without feeling that you need to work on the relationship.
Some characteristics of a person with a Single Definition include:
- A strong sense of self-awareness and self-confidence
- Clear goals and intentions
- The ability to make decisions easily and confidently
- A natural inclination towards leadership and authority
- A tendency to be assertive and direct in communication
- A strong sense of purpose and drive towards achieving their goals.
The energy in your chart is flowing through all the defined centers freely. It has no splits in the flow, and embracing doing “your thing” is healthy for you. My daughter is a Single Split, and it is fascinating for me to see how he “gets” things so much faster and how she does not need anyone to “complete her.” No heartbreaks in her personal life, unlike her Small Split mama. And she processes information so much faster than me. When we got our dog Baz, we did a lot of training because he is a very anxious little boy, but something that took me months to assimilate and build a habit around, Chantelle would get after one or two sessions. And I see that in clients with Single Definition, how much faster they are on getting a grip on things and making decisions to go ahead with strategies (or not) – they seem to process and get things tremendously fast. I am truly jealous of them, but then when you have a split in your Definition, you can experience the Single Definition is specific connections (see my article about Human Design Connection Charts here) and sometimes even through planetary transit activations. I know this is ninja-level stuff, and frankly, we do not need to get obsessed about it. The bottom line is that a Single Split Definition person has access to the flow of all defined energy around their body uninterrupted and can consciously tap into it any day as they feel like. If that is you – congratulations!
Split Definition:
A person with a split definition has two or more centers defined in opposite hemispheres of the chart, with the energy flow interrupted by an undefined gate or channel in the chart. If there is a gate activation missing to complete your definition, you are a Small definition person, and if the whole channel is missing, you will be considered a Large Split Definition person.
A split in the person’s energy makes it harder for them to make decisions and be consistent in their actions. It is like something is missing in order to feel complete and whole. The Split definition person that’s correct (follows their Strategy & Authority) is here to teach everyone else how to be in a partnership because they know what’s missing for them.
A person with a Small Split Definition has a clearer sense of self and purpose (than a person with a large split definition). Another difference is that a person with a Small Split may blame themselves for feeling that something is wrong with them, while if you have a Large Split, you are likely to blame anything and everyone (government, family, circumstances) rather than yourself for your shortcomings and miseries.
Some characteristics of a person with a Split Definition include:
- You may find yourself craving for someone else to “bridge the gap” to feel complete when in not-self. This can show in need to talk something out or come together to get something done.
- You are naturally drawn to people who have definitions that you yourself don’t.
- You may feel a pull towards a hobby or external experience that helps you feel more grounded.
- Split definitions process things slower than single definitions. Allow yourself more time.
As a Split Definition person, you can benefit from working at a café to bridge some centers that will move your work forward. You can look for partners who bridge the Split you have (those who have the missing gates activated in your chart). In partnerships, it is essential to remember the tendency to feel incomplete and find more self-assurance about making decisions regarding your marketing and business on your own.
I have a Small Split Definition with just one gate (Gate 11) missing to “complete” my definition. Looking for my “other half” has been the theme of the first half of my life. I even went traveling in my early 20s, subconsciously looking for that missing peace, until I met my second husband, Les, in Dublin in 2003. I considered him my other half for a long time, but the truth is that he did not “complete” me. He guided me and helped me become the person I am today, but he has no gate 11 to complete that flow, so I actually worked better and could accomplish more when he was not around. And when I am on the call with a person who completes my definition with that gate, it feels like magic. Ideas flow and decisions and made so easily, and I feel like I can process the information quite easily too. I am just wondering where I can find a dog trainer with that gate for my pupper Baz, so I can finally “get” how to handle his anxiety! Haha!
And another observation about the Splits, as a Small Split, I always work on myself. Anything that keeps me misaligned is moved through with inner work. This is a very typical trait of a small split to feel that something needs to be fixed within in order for things to improve… Yet my Les is a Large Split person, and all his troubles are always someone else’s fault. The government, the family he is born into, the banks, the football rivals… It is never him or taking personal responsibility for his failures… And that was causing so much tension between us before I discovered and was able to understand where this thinking was coming from. I often joke that Human Design “saved my marriage,” but there is a smidge of the truth in this statement. Gaining awareness of my own Design and the Design of those around me – family and clients – has completely changed my attitude toward them.
Triple/Quadruple Split Definition:
A person with a triple or quadruple split definition has three or four centers defined in different hemispheres, creating multiple splits in their energy. This can result in a complex and dynamic individual with a lot of potential, but it also requires more self-awareness and balance to be productive and effective.
The issue for a Triple and Quadruple split person is not finding the right partner. It is more about not knowing what to do. Their head is pulling them into one direction, while their heart suggests something else; emotions do their own thing, and the pressure to act is building up. It can get quite intense.
A couple of things that Triple Split Definition brings into your life:
- Difficulty in making decisions, lacking a clear sense of self and purpose, and being passive or reactive in communication
- Difficulty in setting boundaries, finding a unique role in the world, and feeling a sense of self
- A lack of clear goals or direction in life, needing to rely on strategy and authority when in doubt
- A need for diversity and newness in their work and environment to bring a sense of aliveness, and a tendency to create drama when in not-self and get bored easily
- Being emotionally dependent on others and more adaptable in relationships, open to compromise and change, different perspectives and ideas. Attracted to other triple-split people or high-energy/spontaneous people that bring adventure to their life, and may find it hard to be around single-definition people.
- You may process things a little slower and may benefit from seeking guidance and mentorship from others who have more experience.
It is highly recommended for a Triple or Quadruple Split person to get mentorship and guidance from others who have more experience and can offer a different perspective.
I have a few Triple Split clients who tell me when they are with me, they feel they can “own their stuff.” which is such a flattering compliment for me as a strategist – but also, this is exactly where the struggle is. Either rushing in too fast or not knowing what to do in quite insignificant areas – but those small hookups is what usually hold us back the strongest. So if you are a Triple/Quadruple Split, don’t try to figure it all out on your own – get some guidance in the areas that are holding you back, and you will feel so much more in the flow and productive!
No Definition
Generally, this means you are a Reflector (a rare energy type- only about 1% of all population on earth are Reflectors), and you have no defined centers in your chart. This means that you are designed to sample and move through different energies, reflecting them back as you go. Your aura is often described as having a Teflon quality, allowing you to amplify and release energy easier than other types.
When you are not in alignment with yourself, you may tend to rush through decisions, try to be fixed in your energies and hold on to certain roles or expectations, and avoid connecting with others.
A tip for you is to remember that you need time to assimilate and process information. You are designed to be fluid and adaptable. Being in places where you feel good will support that, and public spaces can help you bridge your gates with a neutral aura. Your purpose is to gain wisdom as you move through different energies and connect to others. Take note of the places you find yourself gravitating to and the relationships that make you feel supported and at ease. They are a clue to your true self.
An example comes to mind from my first marriage to a 5/2 Reflector (no definition). We were young and bold (perhaps a little naive), so we literally applied to get married 2 weeks after we met. Crazy right? Well, I am Splenic, so I knew straight away what I wanted in the moment, and he was probably reflecting my splenic broadcast of inner “knowing” – so why wait? Long story short, his mom completely the idea straight away, and the fuss that followed the next day after we “did the thing” made me ask him just to go and withdraw the application. I was sure he did exactly as I asked until almost 4 weeks later ( a lunar Cycle, actually), he asked me if I was looking forward to marrying him the coming Saturday. What he did still makes me think about how true to his Design that decision was. He allowed to follow his heart and gave it time to feel through the motions to make up his mind without any pressure from his family – or me, for that matter. Neither I nor he knew about Human Design then, but now it is such a brilliant experience from my own life to share how Reflector can act in full alignment with their Design.

“My Blueprint completely cleared up all of the debris from taking expensive Human Design business courses that were somewhat misleading.
I had so many a-ha!s but my biggest two were that I can sell from my undefined centers which was liberating to learn and I can have a powerful personal brand with an empty G center. Mind-blowing.
Embracing my 5/1 profile ‘above all’ really helped me to stay focused on what matters as well“
